Cannabinol or CBN is one of the many cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. In earlier days, it was the cannabinoid scientists thought was responsible for psychoactive effects of the cannabis plant (later discovered to be THC).  We now know that CBN is non-psychoactive and a by-product of THC breakdown. When dried cannabis is exposed to light, heat, and air the THC present in the dried flower will slowly oxidize into CBN.

What can CBN be used for?

Potential use as a sleep aid

There are anecdotal reports that CBN can be utilized as a sleep aid and some off-label companies market it as such.  Is there any evidence to support this?  Currently only one study tests this hypothesis back in 1975, and it was only tested in conjunction with THC. The results were promising suggesting CBN assists with sedation or enhances the sedative properties of other cannabinoids, in this case THC.

Appetite stimulation without the high?

One study suggests that CBN may be used as an appetite stimulant which would be valuable for users looking to increase their appetite but do not want to dose with THC due to its intoxicating effects. A study was done with rodents with promising results however much more research and studies must be conducted until we know for sure CBN is responsible for these effects.

Can it be used for anything else?

Other potential uses of CBN that research suggests antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotectant effects.

Where can I find CBN?

CBN exists in extremely low quantities in dried cannabis flower (less then 1%) and no strains are inherently high in CBN.  As stated previously, CBN is formed through the oxidation of THC, therefore strains high in THC that have been allowed to oxidize (left in non-airtight container exposed to light for a weeks) will have increased levels of CBN. Some Canadian recreational markets are already supplying CBN in oil form, specifically the Ontario Cannabis Store and in British Columbia. So, if you are having trouble sleeping or need some help with your appetite, let some of your favorite cannabis age and try some CBN for yourself!
