Excise Taxes on Medical Cannabis
Our position on excise taxes for medical cannabis
Canada House believes that medical cannabis products should be exempt from all excise taxes. Medical cannabis allows our patients to live healthier, more fulfilling lives and is a benefit to not only our patients, but all Canadians.
What is an excise tax?
Excise taxes are taxes placed on specific goods. For example, you pay an excise tax when purchasing fuel for your vehicle.
After the legalization of cannabis in Canada on October 17, 2018, excise taxes were placed on all cannabis products – recreational and medical. There is a federal and provincial excise tax on all cannabis products.
You can find the current federal and provincial excise tax rates here.
Many licensed producers of medical cannabis have absorbed the government’s excise tax.
