Cannabis suppositories are small bullet-like shaped, they are composed of oils so they melt easily once inserted. They are safe to insert into the vagina or rectum depending on condition being treated. Suppositories work great for pain that is localized to the lower half of the body. At Canada House, we have many clients actively using these for; pain associated with Hip Osteoarthritis/ Post-op Hip Replacements, Lower Back Pain, pain associated with kidney stones, Endometriosis, Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome, menstrual cramping, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Scoliosis, and discomfort related to Colorectal Cancer.

Suppositories absorb into the bloodstream through the large intestine or the vaginal epithelium which avoids first pass metabolism, as they are not digested. First pass metabolism is when the stomach and liver break down the cannabis plant into different molecules such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC which creates that euphoric or impaired feeling that we see with THC use. Therefore, when cannabis is administered through the rectum or vagina by suppository, you do not get the same “euphoric high” that other routes cause. This makes suppositories a great treatment for anyone, including patients who would like to refrain from THC due to the “high” they may experience. It is also a great alternative for patients who have nausea or gastrointestinal issues who cannot digest the cannabis and prefer to not inhale.

With suppositories, generally effects are noticed after 10-15 minutes and can last 4-8 hours depending on the patient’s physiology and cannabis tolerance.  As with anything it is important to stay hydrated as dehydration can potentially slow the absorption of cannabis.

Be sure to read the label of your suppositories, as some are recommended for rectal use only. If you intend to use vaginally, ensure you are obtaining a pH balanced suppository for maintaining proper vaginal health. That said, as they can be harder to find, you can always use the rectal route as back up. The medicinal values seep through the vaginal wall and allow for the pain-relieving benefits without the risk of changing your pH levels.

How to Insert a Cannabis Suppository:

  1. Ensure that your hands are clean, gloves applied, and you have a comfortable location to lay down. If you are cutting your suppository in half be sure to use a sterile knife and cut length-wise for ease of insertion
  1. If your suppository is too soft you can harden it in the fridge, freezer or run the package under cold water until hardened.
  1. The suppositories are quite smooth and you do not require lubrication but if you would like the added comfort, a small amount of medical grade lubrication will suffice

  2. Lay on your desired side and bend your opposite leg to a 90 degree angle up towards your chest

  3. Insert the suppository (pointed end first) into your rectum or vagina approximately 2.5-4cm, just past your anal sphincter if rectal. This is important because if it does not pass the anal sphincter, it could easily fall out or not absorb properly.
  1. Once inserted, squeeze your buttocks together for a few seconds to ensure that the suppository stays in. You will want to remain laying down for 10-15 minutes to ensure absorption.

  2. Discard your glove in the garbage and wash your hands with soap and water.

  3. Be mindful when expelling gas as you may have oil remnants leak out at the same time so when in doubt go to the washroom to be safe

Cannabis infused suppositories are indeed underrated, however there’s nothing to be embarrassed about once you experience the highly effective pain relief that comes along with using these trusty little weapons.
