Ocimene, is one of the most common monoterpenes found in nature. Its smell can be described as herbal, woodsy, sweet, and citrusy. Not only being found in the cannabis plant, but also in mint, basil, parsley, orchids, tarragon, kumquats, mangoes and even used in perfumes. If you come across a floral smell of lilacs, it very well could be Ocimene.
Potential benefits of Ocimene
Ocimene is showing to have therapeutic benefits. Scientists in the field of botanical medicine are looking to ocimene for it is antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, anticonvulsant, and antitumor properties. It has also been noted to be an expectorant and decongestant. Ocimene has shown to be energizing but also comforting. Almost like Goldilocks, this terpene is just right.
FUN FACT: Plants use terpenes as a pest deterrent. Plants that have higher concentrations of ocimene have less likelihood of aphid infestation. It is even hypothesized that forager bees can detect the amount of ocimene in the hive to determine nutritional needs of the brood.
How does Ocimene work?
Researchers have discovered that essential oils have the potential to modulate our endocannabinoid system both directly and indirectly. It is possible for essential oils to activate the CB2 receptors within the endocannabinoid system but also through changes in FAAH and MAGL in the central nervous system. As scientists, healthcare professionals, and breeders work together on the forefront of knowledge, it is only a matter of time before better formulations and cultivar are available for specific conditions.
Strains high in Omicene
Sage N’ Sour
Sour Diesel
Sensi Star
Jack Herer
Amnesia
Ocimene has a boiling point (Vaporization) temperature of 150°F/ 66 °C. This is a low temperature so it important to use a good quality vaporizer on a low setting.
Ocimene tends to appear stronger in Sativa based strains, and generally works as a stimulant. Those who suffer from anxiety or cardiovascular complications should take precautions when dosing with Ocimene strains. Adding a chemical compound that provides stimulation properties can potentially make the symptoms of anxiety, hypertension or patient with previous MI, TIA or Stroke worse.
As we always say, if you are suffering from a medical condition ensure you talk with your practitioner or cannabinoid educator prior to introductions of any new products you are not familiar with.
