Did you know we did a march for Helmets to Hardhats? The transition from military to civilian lifestyle is a struggle many of our veterans must encounter. These men and women have left a brotherhood of supporting and looking out for one another and they say goodbye to self-sacrifice. As they enter the competitive employment market of civilians, they are challenged with the “every man for himself” mentality that we all know well. Can you imagine working 30 years in engineering, then when released from the military not being considered any more qualified than someone who has their High School diploma? This is the reality that our veterans face.
Often mistaken as PTSD, soldiers may experience situational or transitional stress related to their release. It can take months to years to recover and adapt to civilian lifestyle. There is a high level of difficulties and obstacles along that path, many may experience substance abuse, financial or relationship difficulties or even homelessness during their transition.
Non-for-Profit Organizations such as Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) are dedicated to assisting veterans who are transitioning from military service, and active reservists, into well paid, highly skilled second careers in construction and related industries. H2H is staffed by former military members who understand the military to civilian transition, they want to see those who served succeed. The Trade Unions provide excellent pay and benefits and can be a great career choice for this community. H2H goes beyond employment, they have entered partnerships with VETS Canada and Renos for Heroes, better assisting veterans who are suffering homelessness or difficulties with mobility in their household. H2H relies solely on the funding of fundraising and word-of-mouth to continue the services they provide.
Canadian Forces veterans Glen Coyle, and Christian Begley will be marching from Collingwood to City Hall, Toronto, Ontario from November 7th to November 9th, 2020. 150kms rucksack march, over a course of 3 days to acknowledge the work and contribution of Helmets to Hardhats in the veteran community. Civilians can show their support by donating to the GoFundMe account in honor of H2H, which can be found on Canada House Facebook Page. All proceeds will be donated to H2H for their continued delivery of services on transitional employment.
