Rosin is a great choice for a high-quality concentrate form of cannabis.
Pressing cannabis is the process of applying heat and pressure for a certain amount of time, which extracts the oils from the cannabis flower. It is a simple process that does not require the use of any solvents. The final product can be very potent and most likely will taste and smell like the strain it was extracted from. You can produce rosin easily if you have the right equipment, we will discuss the top rosin presses that our staff recommend, the process and any other materials needed.
Materials and equipment needed to make rosin:
- Rosin Press
- Cannabis Material (Flower, Hash or Kief)
- Rosin extraction bags (Optional)
- Unbleached Parchment Paper
Temperature, pressure, time and hydration are the variables you need to remember that will determine the quality and quantity of your rosin. Keep in mind, not all strains produce the same amount. Some strains of cannabis produce high amounts of rosin while others barely produce any or none.
We recommend keeping a log of the temperatures, pressure and amount of time used for each strain you press.
Temperature
Temperature is key to making good quality rosin. Before starting you need to ask yourself what you’re looking for. High Quality or High Quantity?
- Low Temperature (180 ̊ F to 220 ̊ F)
Provides more flavor/terpenes, low yield, and a butter/honey type consistency.
- Higher Temperature (220 ̊ F – 250 ̊ F)
Provides less flavor/terpenes, higher yield, and a sap like consistency.
Pressure
Playing around with pressure is important with different strains. It is not necessarily true that higher pressure equals more yield. This is why it is important to keep a log and record the exact process you use on each strain. Be careful with high pressures, as you may extract lipids and chlorophyll into your rosin. This decreases the quality significantly. A good tip, do not use full pressure for the first 10 seconds. Let the plates warm your material before allowing a full pressure press.
Time
Time also plays a key role in producing rosin. We recommend pressing 60 to 90 seconds at your desired temperature. Again, experimenting is the best way in figuring this out.
